Ride Warm with Fly!

If you want to continue riding through the winter you have to have the right gear or you could just move to Florida. If you can't move, well Fly has you covered with riding gear specifically designed for cold weather riding. You'll be surprised at the difference winter gear can make.

How to Stay Warm and Keep Riding This Winter

In part three of our cold weather dirt bike riding apparel series we focus on base and mid layers. If you happen to already participate in winter sports (such as snowboarding or snowmobiling) this section may be a review, but if you don’t—and you’ve decided there’s no way you’ll make it through this winter without riding your dirt bike—then read on. Our intent is to pass along recommendations for choosing the right base and mid layers that will help make your cold weather ride that much more comfortable.

The basic idea behind layering is simple: to give you the ability to adapt to varying cold weather conditions and levels of activity. There is nothing worse than being out on the track or trail and overdressing to the point where you begin to sweat; only to stop and immediately the sweat you’ve accumulated begins to cool and you quickly become cold. Proper layering allows you to tune your riding gear for particular conditions and levels of exertion. The goal is to maintain an optimal temperature that allows you to remain comfortable during and after your ride.

As a rule of thumb, you should be slightly cool when you first begin riding. Depending upon the level of exertion your body will begin to warm up after a few minutes and you’ll quickly be able to assess whether you’ve overdressed, underdressed, or hit the sweet spot. If you begin to sweat too much, stop and remove a layer to avoid moisture build-up. Likewise, if you’re still chilled after 5-10 minutes of riding, stop and add a layer.

With these basics in mind, the following are the specifics of FLY Racing’s base and mid layer offerings.

FLY Racing Base Layers

Base layers are one of the most important aspects of cold weather riding. And because base layers sit directly against the skin, the fabric and fit are important. Fabrics designed to wick moisture away from the skin, dry quickly, and fit snug are preferred.

FLY Racing offers a base layer pant and top in two different weights: Lightweight and heavyweight. Depending upon how cold the temperatures are will determine whether lightweight or heavyweight is your best choice. For the most part, the lightweight layers work in the majority of conditions; however, for extremely cold conditions (such as below zero temperatures or high wind-chill) the heavyweight is the way to go.
