KTM’s Sam Sunderland has completed the 12th and final stage of this year’s Dakar Rally to provisionally win the event.

  • Sunderland wins Dakar Rally 2017
  • KTM 1-2 with Walkner second overall
  • Sunderland is the first British competitor to win the race
  • KTM claim their 16th consecutive victory
  • Gerrard Farres was third and first privateer
  • Franco Caimi best rookie with 8th
  • Neither Sunderland or Walkner had ever finished the race previously

He’s done it! British man Sam Sunderland has won this year’s Dakar Rally. As the overall leader of the rally for the majority of the second half of the race, Sunderland successfully completed the final special stage to top the standings.

However, he still has a 700 kilometre liaison stage to make it official.

A rider who’s been through hell and back to achieve his dream, Sunderland missed the race in 2016 due to a broken leg.

He had yet to finish the race on his two previous attempts. But 2017 has been his year, and today is is day.

Take it home Sam…
